Hello! Welcome to our blog!

We’re Brennan and Michala Hilgen and we’re currently living in Lilongwe, Malawi. We’ve been here since February 2017 and should be here until December 2018.

Why are we here? We’re here working with our church, United Church of God, and the non-profit LifeNets.

How did we get here? Well, back in September 2016, Brennan and I were keeping the Feast of Tabernacles in Mexico and saw a Feast film about the work being done in India. Both of us were touched and felt God pushing us towards overseas work. Soon after the Feast, we volunteered for any type of international work, thinking we could go and help in India for a couple months. Well, God had different plans. We ended up going to Malawi for a year, and at the end of the year, we felt that we needed to stay and finish the job, so we’re still here! This past year has been the hardest year of our lives, but we wouldn’t trade it out for the world. We’ve been so blessed this whole year, made lifelong friends, and have gained a new understanding of James 1:2-4, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials…”

In February I started a blog on Blogger (https://becomingmzungus.blogspot.com/) but we traveled a lot and when we were home we were often without electricity and wifi. I loved the Blogger platform, but they don’t have an app so I couldn’t post for those long periods of wifi-less time. This year I’ve decided to switch to Word Press so I can post from my phone whenever I need.

Please visit http://lifenets.org/ for more information about LifeNets.

Hope you enjoy reading about our adventures!

  1. Hi Brennan and Michala;
    Wow – what a great story! I’m a work-mate of your Dad’s at Genentech and wanted to reach out and say hi. My local church (Piedmont Community Church near Oakland) has a sister church, Kafita there as well. About 4 years ago my (now 21 y.o.) daughter Betsy went on a Mission trip and had a wonderful experience. Our Youth Minister Scott Kail is taking another group of 10-15 high school students there this summer and I thought I would put you in touch if that’s okay.

    All the best to you!

    1. Thanks for reading! We’d love to be in contact with them. The church Kafita (I think I found the right one) is only a few miles from our house. I believe my dad gave you my email- that’s the easiest way for us to communicate. Thanks!
